This is not a dull manual of facts and figures, but a lively, provocative and at times very witty (Greedonomics 101) insight into the Housing Crisis. If you are considering a mortgage or refinancing, Mary Tootikian's book is a must read. She skillfully outlines the scandalous history and hype of 100% mortgages --don't worry about your long-term debt, there's plenty money for everybody!
But as Mary points out - a mortgage is a long-term debt and therefore you need to be the judge of your financial management. This requires careful planning and knowing your limitations when it comes to borrowing. Mary offers a powerful solution in her series of worksheets at the end the book. These in themselves are a goldmine, pointing out what you should know and what you should do. Her advice is a LAMP (Loan with Affordable Monthly Payments) in the darkness of a housing market gone mad with subprime mortgages and lunatic lending. She takes you step by step through the types of mortgages available and helps you to select which mortgage is right for you. She helps you to think carefully, weighing all the options, before you commit yourself to something you simply can't afford. The book contains 239 pages are valuable and vital information for those wanting to own their own home. Every potential house owner should have a copy.

Mary Tootikian has the chops needed to take on Washington. In her book, "Stunned In America" she deftly cuts through the bureaucracy and gobbledygook that Washington and Wall Street hands us (through a press now owned by conglomerates) about the housing loan industry. Mary is a voice we can trust. With a long-standing career in mortgages, she knows where we got off track, who has been lying to us and what we need to do about it.
In a book that reads more like a suspense novel than a financial tome, Ms. Tootikian takes us from the Depression of our grandparents day to our own personal depression about the fix we are. But she doesn't leave us there. Not only is there hope for loan reform, there is a way for us to dig out of our current maladies. The book concludes with workbook pages to help us surmise what we can start doing personally to shift our own destiny.
This is a thinking person's manual for financial aptitude. Don't sign any loan papers for anything until you read this book.

Mary Tootikian has hit the ball out of the park with her assessment of our current economic MESS! Her candor and consummate examples recreate the reason the "bubble" in the real estate industry burst. She explains how we got here and gives a specific plan of HOW TO get out of the financial situation we are in.
This book has "hooks" that make will make you laugh and remember the important points which need to be addressed in Congress. Greedonomics 101, Nightmare On Every Street, The Golden Rule, "The Secret" and How To Fix It are all examples of her humor in addressing this serious problem in America.
Mary says "If you think it is almost over, think again". I am a real estate consultant with 30 years of experience investing, selling and buying in all different markets and I firmly believe, like Mary, there is more more "mess" coming. The light at the end of the tunnel IS a freight train and it is coming to run over us.

I was extremely impressed with this book. It is very readable, even for someone such as myself who ordinarily has difficulty following economic issues. The author gives a thorough explanation of how the foreclosure/mortgage crisis happened, and gives clear, sensible suggestions as to how to effectively address the problem. Highly recommended.

Stunned in America is a compelling read and perfectly timed. Mary Tootikian uses her thirty years in the mortgage industry to hit you right between the eyes with information you MUST have to understand the subprime mortgage debacle and how it affects us: the everyday folks who are trying to stay afloat. She explains the fuel that fed the subprime meltdown- from the players to the victims. The beauty of the book is that once the problem is examined the author doesn't just leave you scratching your head. She offers up valuable suggestions plus a workbook to help you get - and stay - on the right path to planning your current and future mortgage plans. It was truly an eye-opener and I would recommend it to anyone who already has or may be considering a mortgage.
